Tom Qab Cov Tsov Rog - After the Wars - Book 1

Topic Notes for Student Writers

Topic: Confined

1. Fences made from different materials, from bamboo to barbed wires and corrugated metal sheets.

2. “So many bad memories of Chiang Kham: There was a fence around the camp and you weren’t allowed to leave to buy anything. If they caught you, you were thrown in jail. You felt like a prisoner.” - Cher Pao Yang, St. Paul

3. Fences were installed by the Thai MOI (Ministry of Interior) not only for the protection and control of the refugees, but also to keep out smugglers, and thieves from entering camp.

4. Chiang Kham and the transit camp of Panatnikhom were much more stringent and security (and fences) were more present. Both were on level ground and not as large as Ban Vinai, so easier to fence off and patrol. Vinai was sprawling and had very little flat land, mostly hills and slopes, and while there were fences, it was only partial, not completely around the camp.

Research suggestions:

* What were the surroundings/ areas outside of camp like? Who lives outside of camps?
